What is Medicare?
Medicare is a U.S. government health care program that provides coverage for qualified individuals. Because it’s critical to have health insurance to pay for expensive medical bills, it’s more important-than-ever to have this valuable insurance coverage. There are four main parts to this insurance:
- Part A covers inpatient and hospital care. This includes emergency services, hospice, skilled nursing facilities and more.
- Part B concerns outpatient care. This includes visits to the doctor’s office, ambulances, mental health care, vaccines and more.
- Part C, also referred to as Medicare Advantage² combines parts A and B.
- Part D covers prescription drugs².
When you are within 3 months of your 65th birthday, you will generally become eligible to enroll in Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage. Original Medicare is offered by the federal government while private insurers offer Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage tends to cover more services at a cheaper rate.
What is the Difference Between a Medicare Cost Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan?
Medicare Cost Plans¹ and Medicare Advantage Plans¹ both have to offer as much coverage as Original Medicare, but there are differences between the two. Costs for these types of plans vary depending on the carrier and your location. A Medicare Cost Plan may save you money in some areas and cost you more in others. A cost plan generally requires the purchase of a separate prescription (part D) plan. For more information, give us a call.
A Medical Advantage Plan² combines Parts A and B of Original Medicare. It can also include additional coverage like Part D, which covers prescription drugs, as well as basic dental and vision coverage. This would depend on the type of Medicare Advantage plan you choose. Both cost plans and Medicare Advantage plans vary in coverage options and restrictions, based on where you live.

What is a Medicare Supplement Plan?
A Medicare Supplement Plan², also known as Medigap can help pay many of the extra costs original Medicare leave behind. These types of plans also allow you to use Doctors anywhere in the country where Medicare is accepted. They often come with international travel coverage options. These plans come with higher required monthly premiums, but with better cost predictions. Like original Medicare, anyone enrolling in this type of plan will need to enroll in a part D prescription plan separately.
